Human skin (the integumentary system) is the largest system in the human body. Skin protects the inside of the human body from the outside world as well as keeps inside important body fluids and chemicals. Due to its exposure to the environment, skin disorders or injuries are common. Additionally, there are skin disorders such as acne, dermatitis, psoriasis, abnormal hair loss, infections, warts, moles and skin cancer which prompt medical attention. Skin cancer is the most frequent cancer in adults. While usually not life threatening, skin cancer should be considered during routine physical examinations in adults. There are three major categories of human skin cancer: (1) basal cell carcinoma, (2) squamous cell carcinoma, and (3) malignant melanocytic melanoma. Malignant melanoma is a potentially deadly cancer which alarmingly is increasing in prevalence in human beings, especially people below age 40 years. Self examination for abnormal moles is important as well as avoidance of excess exposure to sunshine or tanning salon "sessions". Helpful hints to screen for skin disorders is available to our patients through our affiliates:NEBRASKA MELANOMA CENTER ® and AMERISKIN ® |
