The internal sex organs of the male are important for normal growth and development of boys into men. Absence of testosterone from the testis results in characteristic absence of masculine physical features. The prostate is a gland in the male pelvis, adjacent to the lower bladder, that is important in reproduction by providing ingredients for healthy semen.

As men become older, the prevalence of disorders of the prostate increases. These disorders mainly fall into three categories: (1) chronic infection or chronic inflammation of the prostate (chronic prostatitis), (2) exuberant benign (non-malignant) growth of prostate glands and supporting stroma (nodular hyperplasia of the prostate, BPH) and (3) malignancy of the prostate (prostate cancer). Prostate cancer is a leading cause of death in men in the USA. Screening for prostate disease is imporant in men over age 40 years and should be part of periodic physical examinations.

Screening for prostate disorders may include direct palpation of the prostate, blood tests for Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA levels) or acid phosphatase, needle biopsies of the prostate or diagnostic imaging studies. Clinical laboratory tests to assess prostate health are available to our customers.
