As a human being grows and develops, the skeletal system provides the support for the body's organs and systems. As bones grow, bones are strengthened by a combination of dietary calcium admixed with an underlying sophisticated organic bone matrix. Proper intake and body balance of calcium is needed throughout life in order for bones to be strong and sustain the rigors of everyday stress.
As human beings age (or under certain disease conditions), calcium leaves bone and is excreted from the body. The amount of calcium loss may be subtle yet significant, especially if the loss occurs over many years. An injury causing a fracture of a bone may be the first hint of a problem with osteoporosis (decreased bone density due to calcium loss with a normal underlying bone organic matrix). Fractures of hips and the spine are major causes of morbidity and mortality among the elderly, especially women over age 65 years.
Testing for osteoporosis is part of complete medical examinations in adults. Testing may include radiographic imaging or bone density studies as well as clinical laboratory tests. Testing for osteoporosis is available to our customers.
