| Acne | The respiratory system, including the lungs, plays an important role in transferring oxygen from surrounding inhaled air into red blood cells that return to the heart and are distributed throughout the human body. Returning carbon dioxide, derived from the metabolism of the body, is transferred from red blood cells into the lung and then exhaled from the body. The blood circulation of the lung also filters small clots (thrombo-emboli) and prevents these fragments from going to the brain or other vital organs. Pulmonary function is tested in a variety of ways. The laboratory plays
an important role in pulmonary function testing by determining levels
of oxygen, carbon dioxide and other gases as well as the acidity or
alkalinity (the pH of blood) of arterial or venous blood. Disorders
of the lungs eventually cause laboratory changes that are helpful in
diagnosing and treatment lung disease. Tests to evaluate the lungs and
pulmonary function are available to our customers. |
