Acne | Plasma cholesterol and lipid levels are important tests to be performed as a component of an actively managed healthy lifestyle. Lipoproteins transport cholesterol and lipids in the human circulation. Lipoproteins consist of both lipids and protein. The protein portion has several subsets known as apolipoproteins. The lipid portion is comprised mostly of cholesterol, phospholipids, and triglycerides. Numerous studies have demonstrated an increased prevalence of atherosclerotic
vascular disease, xanthomas, and pancreatitis associated with long standing
significantly elevated levels of plasma lipids in human beings. Abnormalities
of plasma lipids are known in the medical literature as “dyslipoproteinemias”.
Some dyslipoproteinemias have a hereditary basis. National guidelines
with desirable target levels of plasma lipoproteins for patients have
been developed in the United States. Testing for plasma lipoproteins,
including cholesterol, is available to our customers. |
