Heart disease is a leading cause of disability and death in the USA. A healthy diet, frequent exercise, maintaining proper body weight, avoidance of tobacco use all contribute to less heart disease prevalence. Heart disease due to narrowing of heart blood vessels is the most common form of heart disease. The narrowing or blockage of these vessels may be due to long standing build up of cholesterol and lipoproteins in the vessel walls. When this narrowing is severe or complete, the heart does not receive the nutrients, including oxygen and glucose, it needs to function properly. Under these stressful situations, the heart may fail or stop functioning altogether.

Extensive assessment of cardiac (heart) function falls primarily into the realm of cardiology, a subspecialty of Medicine. Cardiologists use a variety of diagnostic tests to assess the patient’s heart. The laboratory plays a very important role in assessing cardiac health and function. A complete blood count, thyroid profile, and evaluation of plasma lipids and cholesterol are frequently requested tests and are available to our customers.
