The digestive tract includes the oropharynx (most people chew their food before swallowing!), esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines (gastrointestinal tract or GI tract). The liver, gallbladder, and pancreas also contribute to proper digestion and absorption of food nutrients by the gastrointestinal tract. When people have disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, there are two major ways healthcare providers investigate for potential problems: (1) direct visualization of the GI tract by endoscopy, (2) radiographic studies or diagnostic imaging,

The laboratory can also provide important information about digestive tract disorders, especially if there is blood loss through the digestive tract. Two common causes of blood loss through the digestive tract are peptic ulcer disease and tumors. Screening stools for blood loss is an important way to detect digestive tract problems early and to use other tests to find out what potential problems may be present in the patient. Other clinical laboratory tests helpful in digestive diseases include a complete blood count, liver profile studies, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Testing for digestive tract disorders is available to our customers.
